That's it for you, Pemberton Templeton 2005! You're all done. Congratulations to all the brave writers out there who sacrificed their weekend in the worthy name of creation. Keep checkin' the news section for updates on the verdict, book orders and pot pourri.
All right everyone, this is it. The two plot elements that must be included in all y'alls novellas are:
An awkward situation.
A book.
It's completely your call to what degree and in what form you use these elements, but they must be included for your novella to qualify. When you've completed your brainchild, copy the contract onto an email, fill in the blanks, attach your story, and send it to pemberton.templeton@gmail. Then sigh, or sleep, or get drunk, as you see fit. Remember, unfinished novellas are inelligible for prizes, no matter how great your first paragraph is!
Oh yeah, one more thing: GOOD LUCK EVERYONE, AND THANKS FOR ENTERING!
The next Pemberton Templeton 48-Hour Novella-Writing Contest begins in 4 years, 18 days, 12 hours, 37 minutes, and 9 seconds ago...
Welcome to the infamous Pemberton Templeton 48-Hour Novella-Writing Contest. Hello.
You probably want more of an introduction, so allow us to break it down -- break it down like this:
“Infamous”. Like Mobb Deep. Though Pemberton Templeton is only in its third year, making it something like a bright-eyed toddler, it has gained notoriety, prestige and literary legitimacy much to the alarm of its organizers. We get mail from McClelland & Stewart and the University of Toronto Press. The University of Toronto Press!
“Pemberton Templeton". A mystery. We won’t let you know what it means unless you buy the book of winners and read, at least, the introduction.
“48-Hour”. Beginning 12:00am, Saturday, August 20 and ending 11:59pm, Sunday, August 21. Times are sharp, like cheddar, and non-negotiable.
“Novella-Writing”. This is the primary activity that will occupy the 48 hours. By "novella" we mean a work of prose fiction in any genre and of at least 6500 words (about 22 typed, double-spaced pages) and written in English. Incomplete novellas are not cool.
“Contest”. Herein lies the difference between registering for Pemberton Templeton and just happening to write a novella in 48 hours. Your finished and submitted novella will be judged against those of everyone else who registered, submitted and finished. The three best novellas will be published in a book of winners. The best overall will get a cash prize of three hundred and twenty-five Canadian dollars.
I hope that clears things up. Be sure to consult the Rules and Regulations, and it might be a good idea to check out the news now and then for changes and updates.
But by now you’re probably eager to register, and write your sweet novella, and win great prizes. Right? Right?
We thought so.
So… register. Now!
